IF YOUR TAX RETURN WAS REJECTED BECAUSE YOU REGISTERED FOR THE STIMULUS, FOLLOW THESE STEPS!!

This spring, millions of taxpayers registered to get a stimulus payment through the IRS non-filer tool or by filing a $1 stimulus return through a tax prep service.

The registration process was intended as a way for those who aren’t required to file taxes to submit important addresses and other information to the IRS, but in fact, the registration process resulted in a filed tax return.

If you did this and you’re now trying to file for 2019, your tax return e-file will be rejected. Does this sound like your situation? Don’t worry – we’re here to help. We’ll walk you through a few extra steps, so you can file a full return now.

Here’s what to do if your e-file return was rejected by the IRS
If you used the IRS non-filer tool or filed a simple $1 tax return to receive a stimulus payment, and have since determined that you do need to file a 2019 return, you’ll need to follow these steps to get the correct information to the IRS.

If you used the IRS non-filer tool or filed a return with $0 or $1 of income, then you need to file a new tax return by U.S. mail instead of electronically with “Amended EIP Return” written or printed at the top. Our tax pros can help you navigate this process, or check out the next section if you want to do it yourself.

If you filed your 2019 return with $2 or more of income, you should file your 2019 taxes using Form 1040-X to amend your return.
